"Good Morning, Indiana" 2019 Oil on Canvas 48" X 36" Private Collection
Introducing Rippey Art
Michael Rippey is an oil painter with studios in Holland, Michigan, and Fernandina Beach, Florida. He began painting seriously in 2013, after retiring from a 37-year career in the golf industry. His companies developed, operated or provided consulting support to more than 250 golf clubs throughout the U.S. and internationally.
Earlier in his career (admittedly, it is not easy to connect the dots...) he graduated from the University of Missouri School of Journalism in 1972, after serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1966 to 1970. He worked as a newspaper reporter in the Chicago area before shifting to public affairs management in 1974. He joined a Chicago-based management consulting firm in 1978, and became a partner and vice president of that firm in 1982. He left the firm in 1986 to establish his first golf company with two new partners.
Michael has painted occasionally for many years, even selling a few paintings along the way, but since 2013, oil painting essentially has been a new career. His style has evolved through self-study, a lot of trial and error, and classes and workshops with established artists like James Brandess, Dawn Stafford and Jerry Fresia. Michael considers the 2020 painting at right, "Fresh Snow Atop the Dunes," to be one of the best examples of his recent work. The dramatic Lake Michigan dunes around Holland provide endless subject matter, as do the area's marinas, historic barns and beautiful countryside. Equally appealing scenes abound in the historic low country around Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island, Florida, where Michael and his wife, Durenda, spend the winter months. The 2020 painting at right, "Amelia Sunrise," is representative of the scenes Michael paints in and around their Florida neighborhood, Oyster Bay Harbor.
