When one lives and paints near Lake Michigan in the summers and Amelia Island, Florida in the winters, boats are an important element of the character and the culture. So it is no surprise that boats - particularly rowboats and sailboats - have been an important element in Michael Rippey paintings for many years.
"As my 'style,' or whatever one chooses to call it, has evolved over the past few years," Michael explains, "My boat paintings have remained fairly impressionistic, with simple composition and the major emphasis not necessarily on the boat itself, but in using the boat as an element in what the painting really is more about - capturing the light and conveying a mood."
Occasionally Michael also paints related marine subjects, particularly buoys. "Buoys are not as common on Lake Michigan or in Florida as they are in New England, but I love the endless variety of shapes and colors, and I like the weather-beaten, banged up look that working buoys usually have."
All paintings are original oils, and all are nicely framed or executed "gallery style," with the painting extended over the edges of the canvas. Prices are exclusive of shipping costs (if any), and Michigan sales tax (not applicable to paintings purchased to be shipped out of state).
