Boats and Buoys
Boats are an important part of the culture here in the Saugatuck/Douglas area of southwestern Michigan. Our towns are located right on Lake Michigan, a body of water that I have been around most of my life, starting with my boyhood in Escanaba, which is in Michigan's Upper Peninsula (dat's da U-P, eh?).
Currently we live on a hill overlooking the Kalamazoo River, which flows into Lake Michigan. We enjoy kayaking on the river. I am in extended negotiations with my wife, Durenda, about getting a “real boat,” but my progress thus far has been negligible.
With regard to the buoy paintings, buoys are not as common on Lake Michigan as they are in New England, but I love the endless variety of shapes and colors, and I like the weather beaten, banged up look that most of them have.
